About This Product
Most "clean retinol alternative" products feature bakuchiol as a single notable ingredient and then fill the rest of the formula with water, silicone, and synthetic emulsifiers. The cleanness is in the lead ingredient. The rest of the product tells a different story.
Live Simply and Naturally's Radiance Balm is entirely different in construction. There are no synthetic emulsifiers because there's no water phase to emulsify — this is a balm format, a concentrated lipid base with every ingredient doing functional work.
The foundation starts with grass-fed and finished beef tallow from suet — the fat surrounding the kidneys, considered the purest and most nutrient-dense form of tallow. Its fatty acid profile (oleic, palmitic, stearic, palmitoleic) closely mirrors the skin's own sebum, which explains why it absorbs readily and doesn't congest. Combined with AEA-certified emu oil (the American Emu Association certification ensures sourcing and quality standards) — one of the most deeply penetrating topical ingredients available, anti-inflammatory, and documented for promoting cell regeneration in treated tissue. Olive-derived squalane adds bioidentical moisture-locking. Organic beeswax holds the balm together and seals hydration.
Then the skin renewal stack, which is where this formula earns its name.
Cacay Nut Oil (from the Cacay tree of the Amazon) is among the highest natural sources of retinol (Vitamin A), with naturally occurring levels that exceed rosehip and argan oil. It also delivers exceptional concentrations of linoleic acid (essential fatty acid, anti-inflammatory, barrier-repairing) and vitamin E. It's one of the more impressive ingredients to appear in a small-brand formula and it's often overlooked because the brand doesn't have the budget to market it.
Bakuchiol — extracted from Psoralea corylifolia seeds — is the plant compound that clinical research has most consistently shown to deliver retinol-comparable results: collagen synthesis stimulation, accelerated cell turnover, reduction in fine lines, improvement in uneven tone. The mechanism is different from retinol's but the outcomes have been documented in head-to-head trials. Safe for sensitive skin, and importantly, safe during pregnancy (unlike retinoids) per available research.
Organic Green Coffee Bean Oil (unroasted) is rich in chlorogenic acids and sterols with documented photoaging protection and antioxidant properties. Organic Evening Primrose Oil contributes GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), an omega-6 fatty acid specifically studied for skin barrier function, hydration, and hormone-related skin conditions. Calendula CO2 (CO2-extracted calendula, which preserves more of the active faradiol esters than standard infusion) is one of the most potent plant preparations for skin repair and inflammation. Astaxanthin closes the antioxidant layer — the same potent carotenoid antioxidant that appears in the strongest formulas in this category.
