A lot of what's labeled "vanilla extract" on grocery shelves is closer to flavored alcohol than real vanilla — synthetic vanillin doing the heavy lifting, with just enough actual bean to legally use the word "extract."
Burlap & Barrel's is the opposite: whole Nyanza vanilla beans, sourced vine-ripened rather than picked early like standard pods, infused in a mix of rum and bourbon through a slow, high-proof extraction crafted in collaboration with Bittercube, the Milwaukee bitters house known for meticulous, botanical-forward production. What comes out is a full-bodied, dark mahogany extract with real depth — tart cherry and soft marshmallow notes riding on top of the vanilla, not masking it.
Use it the way you'd use any vanilla extract — baked goods, custards, whipped cream — or stir it into coffee and cocktails for a lift that tastes like an actual bean went into the bottle, because it did.
