About This Product
Skin does its most significant repair work at night. Cortisol drops, cell turnover accelerates, and the barrier is actively rebuilding — but only if what you've applied supports that process rather than sitting on the surface doing nothing, or worse, clogging the environment where repair happens.
Most overnight treatments are either too heavy (leading to milia and congestion), built on synthetic occlusive agents that seal rather than nourish, or marketed as appropriate for day and night without distinguishing what the skin actually needs at each.
Soft n Fat's Lunae Evening Balm is formulated specifically for the overnight window. The woman behind this brand has built every product around the same conviction: that skin responds best to ingredients that mirror what it's made of, sourced from animals and plants treated with the same care she treats the product itself.
The base is grass-fed and finished tallow — a fat whose oleic, palmitic, and stearic acid profile closely parallels the skin's own sebum, making it compatible in a way that plant oils with higher PUFA content typically aren't. Combined with emu oil — one of the most deeply penetrating animal-derived skincare ingredients, anti-inflammatory, and particularly well-studied for promoting cell regeneration in damaged or stressed skin. Together, these two provide a carrier that gets the botanical actives where they need to go.
Meadowfoam seed oil adds exceptional stability to the formula (its 98% long-chain fatty acid composition makes it resist oxidation better than almost any other plant oil) and a moisture seal that holds hydration in throughout the night. Hazelnut oil contributes a lighter, slightly astringent quality useful for keeping the formula balanced rather than heavy.
Then the active botanical layer: wild carrot seed oil (Daucus carota) is rich in carotenoids, vitamin E, and compounds that support skin renewal — particularly useful for uneven texture and the kind of dullness that accumulates with age and sun exposure. Sea buckthorn berry oil is one of the most nutrient-dense topical ingredients available — extraordinary omega-7 (palmitoleic acid) content, carotenoids, and vitamins A, C, E, and K, all well-documented for regeneration, barrier repair, and visible brightening. It's also notably high in PUFAs, which is why the morning rinse instruction matters: PUFA-rich oils are less stable under UV exposure, and applying them without rinsing before going outside works against the benefits they're delivering overnight.
Pine resin is an underused ingredient in modern skincare with a long history in botanical medicine — antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and specifically supportive of wound healing and skin repair. Birch bark extract contributes betulin and betulinic acid, compounds studied for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. Rosemary antioxidant stabilizes the formula and delivers its own skin benefit in the process.
